The Cathode Strip Chamber Data Acquisition System for CMS
نویسندگان
چکیده
The Cathode Strip Chamber (CSC) [1] Data Acquisition (DAQ) system for the CMS [2] experiment at the LHC [3] will be described. The CSC system is large, consisting of 218K cathode channels and 183K anode channels. This leads to a substantial data rate of ~1.5GByte/s at LHC design luminosity (10cms) and the CMS first level trigger (L1A) rate of 100KHz. The DAQ system consists of three parts. The first part is on-chamber Cathode Front End Boards (CFEB)[4], which amplify, shape, store, and digitise chamber cathode signals, and Anode Front End Boards (AFEB)[5], which amplify, shape and discriminate chamber anode signals. The second part is the Peripheral Crate Data Acquisition Motherboards (DAQMB), which control the onchamber electronics and the readout of the chamber. The third part is the off-detector DAQ interface boards, which perform real time error checking, electronics reset requests and data concentration. It passes the resulting data to a CSC local DAQ farm, as well as CMS main DAQ [6]. All electronics in the system employ FPGAs allowing programmability. In addition, several high-speed serial interface technologies are employed.

متن کاملSpatial Resolution Attainable with Cathode Strip Chambers at the Trigger Level
A simple network of comparators applied to the strip signals of a cathode strip chamber allows quick hit localization to within a halfstrip width, or +/a quarter-strip. A six-plane chamber with 6.4 mm wide strips was tested in a high-energy muon beam. The chamber was placed behind a 30 cm thick iron block. We show that patterns of hits localized to within a halfstrip allowed us to identify 300 ...
متن کاملEffect of gas composition on CMS Cathode Strip Chamber performance
Cathode strip chambers (CSCs) are multiwire proportional counters that will be used as muon detectors in the Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) experiment at the European Center for Nuclear Research (CERN). The composition of the gas inside the chamber influences important chamber parameters, such as gas gain and operational voltage range. Differences in these parameters were examined under variations...

The Cathode Strip Chamber (CSC) sub-detector [1] at the CMS experiment at CERN consists of trapezoidal 6layer chambers located in the Endcap regions. The CSC system is needed for precise muon identification and generation of trigger primitives for the Level-1 trigger system. The CSC triggering system comprises the onchamber anode and cathode electronics, the off-chamber boards housed in 9U crat...
متن کاملTests of Cathode Strip Chamber Prototypes
We report on the results of testing two six-layer 0:6 0:6 m cathode strip chamber (CSC) prototypes in a muon beam at CERN. The prototypes were designed to simulate sections of the end-cap muon system of the Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) detector which will be installed at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). We measured the spatial and time resolutions of each chamber for different gains, different o...
